Fox-Jerusalem encourages more women to engage in coaching

Australian slalom rowing coach Miriam Fox-Jerusalem hopes to encourage more women to take up leadership positions in sports with the help of her award - the "best coach" of the International Olympic Committee. Fox-Jerusalem is preparing for another busy ICF rowing slalom season, which will include the 2023 World Championships and Olympic qualification at Lee Valley in London this September. Lee Valley is the place where she coached her daughter Jessica to the K1 silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics. Jessica Fox won Olympic bronze in kayaking and canoeing in Rio, and then won gold when she made her rowing slalom debut in Tokyo. The Australian added another bronze in Japan. In December, Fox-Jerusalem, a two-time Olympic champion and bronze medalist from Atlanta, who is currently a successful coach of the team, was awarded the IOC Award for services to coaches. In an interview with the IOC, she hoped that this would inspire women. "Perhaps now it will show that this is possible and there is recognition of coaching, because there are not enough women involved in coaching all over the world. I'm lucky, I think there are many coaches around the world who deserve this award too. The more women we have, the more they can do this job and be a good coach normally, the door is always open for them." IOC statistics show that over the past decade, only 10 percent of all coaches accredited at the Summer and Winter Olympic Games have been women. Only 13% of coaches in Tokyo are women. The IOC has established a working group of women coaches, and is also implementing the four-year Women in Sport for Excellence (WISH) program, which aims to train more than 100 women to coach at the elite level. So far, 66 female coaches from 14 sports have participated, including kayaking and canoeing, and Fox-Jerusalem is encouraging more women to participate. "To the participants of the WISH program, women who want to coach and cannot be in this program, follow your dream and achieve what you want to achieve. Try to get an education and gain experience to achieve your goal."
