ICF is pleased to publish the preliminary document "Illustrated Guide to Upper Limb Classification". This document will be used at the national level to expand national paracanoe activities to include upper limb disorders. Currently, the classification of athletes with paracanoe includes only lesions of the lower extremities and trunk. The long—term goal of the ICF Paracanoe team is to empower athletes by including upper limb disorders in the IPC-approved athlete classification system. To achieve this goal, national federations need to develop a population of athletes with upper limb injuries so that there are enough athletes who could be included in a scientifically based study. The aim of the study will be to develop a fair and equitable classification system for athletes that would fully include upper limb disorders under the current system. Given the current approval process and depending on the number of athletes who will be recruited for the study, the goal will be to implement an inclusive classification system for athletes of lower limbs, trunk and upper limbs approved by the IPC starting at the end of 2028. Special thanks are due to all participants in the temporary system and especially to Julie Gray (Great Britain) for her leadership and coordination.
