New Year's message 2024 from the president of the ICF

Dear friends, colleagues, national federations and rowers from all over the world. Behind us lies a grueling but successful 2023 with serious challenges that we had to overcome. First of all, we have coped with our main task of organizing competitions of the highest class. We know very well and appreciate the professional work of our federations and organizers, without which we would not have been able to promote our sport worldwide and attract more sports fans interested in our sport. I could list all the outstanding world championships and World Championships separately now, but that would be beyond the scope of this speech. So please forgive me for listing just a few highlights here. Our World Championships in slalom and kayak cross in London and sprint in Duisburg have become the best advertisement for our sport worldwide. But all other competitions also put our athletes in the spotlight, and countless supporters and volunteers made all our competitions an unforgettable experience for our athletes. Perhaps one of our greatest successes this year was the confirmation of the presence of our two Olympic sports at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles on 28 at the IOC session in Mumbai. Continuing the Olympic Games, sprint and slalom remain central to the Olympic program: by Los Angeles 2028, 16 medals have been confirmed in two of our disciplines. At the beginning of the year, we also visited Brisbane, which has exciting plans for our sport in 2032. Please know that together we have successfully strengthened our long-term positions in the Olympic movement this year. But apart from all our competitions, the global political situation has put us in serious trouble. Nevertheless, we had to find a balance in our decisions, take into account Olympic values in order to unite the world through the values of sport. The difficulty was that within our Federation there were two completely different positions that were opposite to each other. I think we have achieved a good balance with our decision regarding neutral athletes, which many other international federations consider a role model. And I am grateful and proud of our canoe community, which has continued to support our Ukrainian rowers again this year. Our new development strategy of providing customized offers and focusing on sustainable training of local trainers has paid off, and in 2023 we were able to train more than 200 trainers in Africa and America. Our first women's symposium in Dublin, held with the support of the Irish Canoe Federation, was a great success in implementing our gender equality strategy. Our sustainability workshop at the World Slalom Championships, supported by British Canoeing and our Memorandum of Understanding with Alibaba Cloud, will help us make our sport and our competitions even more sustainable. We have managed to attract many new partners for our Federation and significantly increase revenues from sponsorship and partnership programs. Thanks to all the suppliers and companies who support our sport with their contributions. Fortunately, our sport is not only about money, but without additional income we will not be able to achieve our ambitious goals of supporting our federations around the world. We have made great progress in spreading our sport around the world. We have learned that our community is already willing to pay for a first-class product that can be invested in the further development of our sport, even if we still need to improve the choice of our partners and we can still increase the number of our audience on our traditional channels. We have significantly increased our television presence in many countries by signing new contracts with TV channels around the world, and our cooperation with China Media Group has led to an increase in the audience in Asia. My colleagues on the Board of Directors, our vice presidents and our office under Richard's leadership have achieved a lot this year. Now we can focus on next year's Olympic Games, which will unite the whole world and show the power and importance of the Olympic Movement as one of the last global unifying movements in a world that is increasingly moving away from each other. Paris represents a special opportunity for our sport: the three-time Olympic champion became the president of the organizing committee and presented the kayak cross. Interest in our competitions is already very high, which is reflected in ticket sales. We will do our best to make our athletes shine there and show the world how attractive and exciting our sport is. Finally, I would like to thank all our federations, all the coaches and officials, the numerous volunteers and my colleagues on the board of directors, as well as our dedicated staff for their tremendous commitment to the further development of our sport in all disciplines, both non-Olympic and Olympic. Let's continue to work together and make the Olympic Year 2024 another successful year for our sport. I wish you all a peaceful time, good health and a successful new year 2024.
